India's Richest Shrine Goes Green
The crown jewel is the dazzling gold-plated temple of Lord Venkateshwara. Located in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, this is not just one of Hinduism's holiest shrines, but also one of the richest. It has an annual income of $340m - mostly from donations. Between 50-100,000 people visit this temple every day. This puts enormous pressure on water, electricity and other energy resources. Now the temple is using its religious influence and economic might to change the way energy is used here. Read more...
GBC Launches Own Web Site
ISKCON’s top managing authority, the Governing Body Commission, continues its efforts to put a face on itself and connect more with the general devotee public with a new website, gbc.iskcon.org, launched at 1pm Mayapur time on Friday February 10th.
“There has been a lack of easily available information about the GBC---the structure, who the members are, what their particular services are, and what their plans are for ISKCON's future,” says ISKCON Communications Director Anuttama Dasa. “The new website will fill that gap.” Read more...

The library catalog of the Bhaktivedanta Research Centre (BRC) in Kolkata, India—which opened in June 2009 and aims to be an easily accessible resource of all Gaudiya Vaishnava literature—has expanded from 3,500 titles in October 2010 to an amazing 15,000 works today. Naturally, these include all ISKCON founder Srila Prabhupada’s books, and an expanding library of works by his successors. There are also all the major Puranas and Vedas, as well as some commentaries by Madhva and Ramanuja Acharyas. However, the library also includes 2,500 works procured last year from the collection of Sri Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, one of the main scholar disciples of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, ISKCON Founder Srila Prabhupada’s guru. World Yoga Day Planned
Renowned masters from various Yoga schools—including ISKCON’s Yadunandana Swami and Radhanath Swami—met for an international Yoga conference this past December 4th and 5th at the headquarters of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living Foundation in Bangalore, India to agree on a date for a special World Yoga Day.
World Yoga Day, which representatives hope to have approved by the United Nations and UNESCO, will see the different schools of Yoga, regardless of their specialization, promote Yoga around the world for the benefit of everyone. More than 300 delegates from all over India, Europe and the U.S. attended the conference, entitled Yoga: A Science for World Peace. Read more...

On New Years in the two Utah temples 120 participants chanted a total of 1,320 rounds. Spanish Fork devotees and guests chanted 758 rounds while Salt Lake City attendees chanted 526. Total number of mama mantras chanted was 142,568 and total number of God's names (Krishna & Rama) was 1,140,544.

On a recent Thursday night at the Hare Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, a thick wave of incense floats through the air as the chords of a singsong prayer echo off the temple's octagonal ceiling. Underneath a canopy of flowers and lights, a statue of the dark-skinned Krishna and his ivory-skinned wife Radha smile out at the half dozen students sitting cross-legged and bare-footed on the floor. Some sway back and forth to the music, singing along with the words of the prayer while others close their eyes in blissful meditation. The musical ceremony is a chance to offer gifts back to God, the original giver, and is the first portion of the evening's yoga class here. Read more...
Annual Japathon Sunday New Year's Day
Devotees start off the New Year trying to chant 1,000,000 names of God, or 950 rounds on their rosaries. It takes about ten minutes to chant a round (864 names of God). Devotees begin at home, come to the temple, attend the noon arati, enjoy a pot luck vegetarian feast (to which everyone is invited), and continue chanting thru the afternoon until the evening arati at 6 pm. All guests will be loaned a set of beads and invited to chant at least one round. All names and totals will be written on a board.
